Interactive White Board for Under 50 Euros

Affordable interactive white board technology for every school sounds a bit Utopian, don’t you think? I recently found out that maybe it’s more realistic than you might have guessed! I know that pretty soon I’m going to have to tone down my enthusiastic introductions, but I literally applauded the computer screen (like a weirdo) when I saw this.

After recently having spent more than €4000 at our language school on a brand new Smart Board, youIWB for Under €50 -video can imagine that I was just a bit surprised when reading Joe Dale’s blog about a school in Ireland who had managed to make one for under €50. “Rubbish,” I thought to myself. I thought wrong. The Inver National school in Ireland even have a blog to show you the how-to-dos of the whole process.

From searching through the Inver National’s video of the whole process, I found out that it’s the brain-child of Johnny Lee, a veritable genius of affordable and accessible interactive technology. It was at this point that I started clapping :-)

Essentially it’s a very simple idea, which has been turned to good use. Simple ideas are always the best, don’t you think? The €50 IWB uses a Wiimote- the remote control from a Nintendo Wii, which costs €40 from my local supermarket, and an infra-red pen.

The Wiimote contains an infra-red sensor which can track the movement of an infra red light source. Johnny connected his Wiimote to a computer using Bluetooth and with a little bit of programming magic, he came up with some free IWB software to make it all work together. Incredible!

Here is his video on how to setup the IWB:

So I don’t think you need me to tell you how much this could benefit schools in countries where the economy is still developing, but from looking at this, I’d say that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of schools worldwide have now got IWBs within their price range. That has got to be a good thing, don’t you reckon?

I’ll definitely be trying this out with our school and I’ll be sure to write about it here too. If you want to try it out, watch this space and I’ll let you know how I get on. Send me a comment if you fancy trying to work together on making a Wii IWB, Two minds are definitely better than one!

Wow! This is an amazing simple idea! Let me know if you try to make it and how it goes ok? Thanks!

Nice idea, but distinctly more expensive than 50 Euros since it requires a dataprojector. If you’re going to have to buy a data projector the cost of a whiteboard isn’t far off.

Hi there Paulo and Eric, thanks for dropping by guys and thanks for the comments.

Paolo, I’m definitely going to try it out, so I’ll definitely let you know how it goes. As you say it’s so simple it’s definitely worth trying. The school in Irelad seemed to think it worked well enough to use in class, and I’m sure that with a bit of trial and error teachers could find it just as versatile as the “fully-fledged” versions.

Eric, you’re totally right that you will need a data projector and you’re correct too when you say they don’t come cheap. However, you still need a data projector when you buy an IWB and they ain’t cheap then either :-) Of the €4000+ we spent on our IWB / data projector combo recently about a quarter of it was for the projector, and that was because we got a fancy “short throw” one too. Checking on http://www.kelkoo.it , you can pick up a cheap-ish projector for €350 which is still a pretty good saving on the full blown version don’t you think?

Anyone else fancy an IWB experiment?

    Seth :-)

Sometimes people ask me if I have a link to download a movie. My answer is always NO. i’ve never downloaded any movie in my entire life. Anything related to movies that I have experience downloading are only the trailers and the soundtracks. Movie file? Never.

But yesterday I accidentally saw a page about movie download. The good news is, it is for free. At least that is what it said. The other thing that stand out from the page is their claim that they have a High Definition movies download. On the front page they have movie download for The Dark Knight, Wanted, and Hancock. All this year’s summer blockbuster movies. Quite interesting huh :)

I’ve tried to click the link they provided to download the movie. I chose The Dark Knight. After I installed the downloading software I believe I will not have enough stable internet connection to download some movies from there. So I think I just leave it up to you to try :)

Here is the address of that website.

Give me some good news if you succesfully download some movies from there. I might try it next time :)
